Dohuk, Kurdistan / Wednesday, 17 June 2015 – The children from Rwanga Community were eagerly waiting for the ribbons to be cut, they have been waiting for this moment, to play in the newly built KidsZone.
Rwanga Foundation completed and two major projects in Rwanga Community, the green space park and the KidsZone which consists of a football pitch, a basketball and volleyball area, a playground and an educational area (library, music room, art room, computer lab).
KidsZone is designed to focus on the children and youth in Rwanga Community, providing them a facility to encourage physical activity and creativity. Keeping them positively occupied in a place where activity for this group is limited. Children and youth have a right to have access to these basic needs.
Yasamin, a young Yazidi girl said “I am so happy about the Kid zone project, because it’s very helpful and important for us, we have had a lot of problems to reach books for reading and getting knowledge in our free time and for our study in the school as we have had problem to get the necessary books in different language such as Kurdish, Arabic and English”.
As the scissors were cut and the gates were open, the children eagerly ran into the facilities, hyper with joy.
Awdal, a young Yazidi boy based in the community, said “completing the KidsZone project for the youths is very important and it is a big achievement as we were dreaming to have a football ground to play in it, but today we have more than a football ground in the community, having basketball and volleyball court makes us feel motivated and proud. I can say today is one of my happy days”.
The adults also had something to look forward to; based on IDP resident requests the project for two green space parks was also complete. This space is used for recreational purposes and important for the IDPs who have faced so much.
Rwanga foundation first implemented the KidsZone project in Qushtapa camp for Syrian refugees in Erbil. The second one has been implemented in Rwanga Community. The success of this project has been praised by many.
