Rwanga Foundation and GIZ Renovate 16 Schools in Erbil and Sulaimani

Erbil, KURDISTAN (March 27, 2018) - Rwanga Foundation held a ceremony to hand over the 16 renovated schools of a two joint projects (Funded by GIZ) in Sulaimani and Erbil.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Pshtiwan Sadiq (Minister of Education), Kurt Stöckl-Stillfried (German Consul General in Erbil), Marc Levesque (Head of Economic Development and Livelihood Programs at GIZ), Abdulsalam Medeni (Chef Executive Director of Rwanga Foundation) and NGOs, Directors of the Ministry of Education and Media.

Rwanga Foundation, in two joint projects with GIZ, agreed to renovate a set of schools in both the cities of Erbil and Sulaimani. In Erbil, in which four schools had been renovated, around 3,200 students and teaching staff, which receive and teach education every academic year, took benefit. In Sulaimani and nearby towns the number of schools was high as twelve. The number of students and teaching staff benefiting in Sulaimani reached around 6,000 for each academic year.

In total, the number of beneficiaries of the four-month long project are 9655people including 3159 teachers and students in Erbil and 6032 teachers and students in Sulaimani. Furthermore, the project also provided job opportunities for 268 people in Erbil and 196 people in Sulaimani, including female, male, people with special needs and IDPs.

‘’I was unemployed from September until the end of December 2017. Now, that I have this job, I am happy because I can get my daily needs and I can also support my family at the same time.’’ said Dashne Fatih, a female worker while helping renovating one of the schools.

The project focused on basic and fundamental needs of renovation at the four schools for which thorough assessments had been conducted by Rwanga Foundation’s Field/Engineering teams, in coordination with the concerned authorities and the school administrations.The project included fixing doors, windows, water and sanitation systems (as necessary), electrical facilities, wall and ceiling cracks, in addition to plastering, painting and cleaning the schools, etc.  

Moreover, this is the second joint project of renovating schools. In 2017, funded by GIZ, Rwanga Foundation renovated 9 schools in Duhok and Erbil. 

Education is one of the four sectors of Rwanga Foundation, therefore it is planning to continue to hold similar projects.
