Child Friendly Space for Orphans in Sharya Camp

Duhok, Kurdistan (June 4, 2018) - Community Social Center in Sharya camp (funded by GIZ and implemented by Rwanga foundation) incoordination with Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) opened Child Friendly Space for 40 orphan kids.

The Child Friendly Space will be supervised by Community Social Center (CSC) staff with the support of volunteers. The 40 kids (male and female) are aged from 5 to 13 years old and it will be continue till the end of October 2018.

The aim of opening Child Friendly Space is to have the kids participate and gain development of personal independence, freedom to initiate activities and make choice, value each child as a unique individual with special skills and abilities.

"I feel that I am blessed when I see the smile on children face. This space will help to grow sense of well-being, happiness and confidence in their abilities’’ said Chnar Amin, trainer at the CSC.

The kids will spend three hours each day enjoying painting classes, language lessons, critical thinking activities etc.…

"This is the smallest thing that we can do for these children, we love them so much, and we are all here to support them.’’ said Abdulwahid Amin, Head of BCF’s office in Duhok.

Rwanga Foundation operates the Community Social Centers in the six camps of Kabartu 1, Kabartu 2, Chammishku, Shariya,Bajikandal 2, and Qadiya (Rwanga Community) where more than 90,000 IDPs live. Through these community social centers, regular services including legal and community development activities, as community based activities, are provided targeting the entire camp populations with a particular focus on young females and males. 

The project is funded by GIZ and will be implemented in close coordination with MOLSA. The aim of the project is to enable the IDPs in the six camps become more self-reliant, connected, active ,and have adequate capacity to manage themselves at the family and community level. The project started on July 2017 and will continue till November 2018.
