
Erbil – Duhok, KURDISTAN (11, 12 and 14 November 2018) – To celebrate the completion of renovating 15 schools in Erbil and Duhok, and in coordination with GIZ, funded by BMZ (German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development), Rwanga Foundation held three different ceremonies in Erbil and Duhok.
Attendees of the ceremonies were Dr. Pshtiwan Sadiq (Minister of Education), Marc Levesque (Head of Economic development & Livelihood Programs at GIZ) , Abdulsalam Medeni (Chef Executive Director of Rwanga Foundation) and NGOs, Directors of the Ministry of Education and Media.
Through the project, 15 schools were renovated in Erbil and Duhok Governorates. The renovated schools in Erbil were: Wasta Rajab Industrial Preparator, Qazi Mohammad Basic School, Erbil Industrial Preparator, Baban Basic School, Sharafkandy Basic School, Shadi Basic School, Azadi Kindergarten, Kwestan Basic School, Mahabad Basic School for Girls and Bawaji Basic School. Also, the the five renovated schools in Duhok were: Zewka Abo Basic School, Ashti High School, Lapzer Basic School, Banasor Basic School, and Zanko Basic School.
Dr. Pshtiwan Sadiq, Minister of Education, highlighted the importance of the project to the education system and stated that ‘’We are very thank full for Rwanga Foundation, GIZ and BMZ for renovating 15 more schools. German government has been very active and supportive to the education system and our schools.
Marc Levesque, Head of Economic development & Livelihood Programs at GIZ, thanked Rwanga Foundation’s team and everyone who worked on the project and stated ‘’we have been working with Rwanga Foundation for two and half years. The project consists of renovating 15 schools in Erbil and Duhok. Also providing cash assistance to the poor families and youth through providing jobs. The project supports students, teachers and poor families through providing jobs’’.
In total, 7,581 people were direct beneficiaries (students and teaching staff).
Abdulsalam Medeni, Chef Executive Director of Rwanga Foundation, emplained the aim of the project. ‘’ The project had two aims. One was to give cash for work in order to add more cash in the market. The second aim was to provide strategic services (renovate schools) though the project in the process’’.
The project provided job opportunities to 985 male and female beneficiaries. ‘’A warm thank you to Rwanga Foundation, GIZ and BMZ for providing us with the work and giving people with special needs this possibility to work. There are no difference between people with special needs and normal people. ’’ said a male worker while helping renovating one of the schools.
The project focused on basic and fundamental needs of renovation at all schools for which thorough assessments had been conducted by Rwanga Foundation’s Field/Engineering teams, in coordination with the concerned authorities and the school administrations. The project included fixing doors, windows, water and sanitation systems (as necessary), electrical facilities, wall and ceiling cracks, in addition to plastering, tiling, painting, landscaping and cleaning the schools, etc.
Moreover, this is the third project of renovating schools in which implemented by Rwanga Foundation in coordination with GIZ and Funded by BMZ (German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development) ). During the last two and half years 40 schools have been renovated.
