New projects mitigate water scarcity in Sulaimani Villages

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan — On May 25, 2015, a handover ceremony organized by Rwanga Foundation recognized the completion of two separate water infrastructure projects in Sulaimani’s Maluma and Parazan villages.

The Mayor of Zalan sub-district, Faraidun Mahmud Rasul, and Gapilon district Mayor, Ismail  Ahmed Rasul, mentioned that the water networking project for both villages is crucial for residents to continue a basic standard of living and sustaining a necessary level of agricultural output. The two projects help to alleviate serious issues concerning water scarcity which had put both communities at great risk.

Rwanga Foundation decided and committed to the projects after following news information regarding water scarcity issues affecting the health and agriculture in Maluma and Parazan. Both infrastructure projects included drilling a well to an underground spring and then distributing water to all houses from a central water shed.

Water scarcity is a large concern especially during the summer months in Kurdistan. People are affected throughout the region, which potentially creates an additional vulnerability that has repercussions within rural areas in particular.

Maluma village is home to 260 families and belongs to Gapilon sub-district, where Parazan hosts approximately 60 families and is located within Zalan sub-district. Rwanga Foundation received a certificate of appreciation from Zalan sub-district Mayor, Faraidun Mahmud Rasul.
